Randolph Curtis Rand directed To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee and adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel as the opening production of Burning Coal Theatre Company's 2010/2011 season. McCormick was Rand's assistant director.
To Kill a Mockingbird opened on 9 September 2010 commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Harper Lee's novel as well as the fiftieth anniversary of the first black student to attend the historic Murphey School after Wake County voted to desegregate the school system in 1960. The Murphey School is no longer used by the Wake County school system, but the auditorium of the school was renovated into Burning Coal Theatre Company's permanent home, dubbed the Meeker Auditorium. The production ran with sold out performances for the entire run.Two additional performances were added to the original run.
McCormick directed the remounted production as well as the touring production. Due to its popularity, To Kill a Mockingbird remounted for two weeks as a special fundraising production in March 2010.
From Monday, 21 March to Monday, 28 March, the production toured with ten additional performances to North Carolina middle and high schools.
